SMS Marketing Strategies

Text message marketing statistics show why text messaging is such a great way to contact and interact with your customers. Text messaging is the way in which many consumers prefer to be reached.

Today, some 83% of consumers in the U.S. own a cellphone. This equates to roughly 270 million mobile subscribers, and that is a lot of mobile consumers! Three-quarters of them send and receive text messages on a daily basis. Young adults aged 18 to 24 text the most of any other age group. During an average month, those in this age group send and receive over 3,000 texts.

The Pew Research Center conducted a survey of adult cell phone owners in the U.S. and found that 31% of them said that they prefer to be contacted through text message. Another 14% said that whether they prefer a call or a text depends on the situation. There are many situations where a text is more convenient and discreet than a call, and some consumers prefer a less intrusive means of being contacted, especially by a business.

One mobile marketing method that relies heavily on text message marketing is mobile coupons. Mobile coupons are quite successful; they are said to have a 10x higher redemption rate than traditional paper coupons. In fact, as a direct result of receiving a promotion on their mobile phone, 16% actually made a purchase, while another 50% of U.S. consumers report that they have received a text message from a retailer and made a purchase because of it.

QR codes also play a role in text message marketing, and 34% of consumers have scanned a QR code with their smartphone. Some of those have led to a purchase, while many have led to the consumer feeling more valued and knowledgeable about a product or a business, which helps them with future purchases.

It’s a fact that 90% of text messages are opened and read within 4 minutes of being sent. This is a much higher read rate than is received by email or any other advertising communication. Cell phones have a personal feel, people keep them close, and as a result, text messages are viewed as personal as well. It is also thought that because SMS messages are limited to 160 characters, text messages are more concise and to-the-point, and consumers definitely appreciate the fact that they don’t have to spend a lot of time reading and responding to text messages. It’s quick, easy, and can be done on the go.

According to the New York Times, because of regulations affecting the use of SMS messaging, it’s still a relatively uncluttered marketing channel, free of a lot of spam that now clogs people’s email inboxes. That may be one reason why most text messages are opened and read so quickly. If you want to contact your customers and feel pretty confident that they received your message, send it by text.
